On this first day of November, I am thankful for health insurance.
Nearly 20% of peoplenationwide have no health insurance and even more are under insured. Two weeks ago I had a cold which progressed into a sinus infection and bronchitis. I consider myself lucky that with my health insurance a doctor visit and three prescriptions cost me just under $70.00.
Now $70.00 is a lot of money, but without health insurance that same scenario would have cost nearly $300.00. At that price, I would have had to put off visiting the doctor which could have resulted in a hospitalization and racked up more medical bills.
A group of medical providers, pastors and others from the local faith community recently met to begin exploring the idea of a faith based free medical clinic which would expand medical care to the uninsured and under insured in our community.
Dedicated community members pulling together to provide support for their neighbors in need: that’s an idea I can stand behind!
