| Thanksgiving 1 by Anja Bier |
Besides the turkey, the mashed potatoes and the pumpkin pie, Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on all the blessings of the past year. This has been a year of blessings and challenges. My plan is to review this year by counting my blessings “one by one”.
Studies have shown that people have an easier time identifying the negative in life. All the challenges of the year come to mind: the car breaking down, changing jobs, struggling to balance the checkbook, rainy vacation days and sunny work days. This pessimistic attitude ads to stress and is a major contributor to poor health.
But acknowledging blessings, big and small, opens your eyes to the multitude of gifts we receive each day.
Aristotle is quoted as saying:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
So, if we repeatedly express thanks for the blessings that we have received then we become more grateful and content with our lives. Sounds like a plan.
